Josef Zimovčák (born in 1956)

Czech velocipede rider living at Veselí nad Moravou.

The life of Josef Zimovčák is bound to cycling. One of the most famous inhabitants of Veselí nad Moravou, Mr. Zimovčák is also among important personalities of the world; his performance in sport counts him among the world´s best velocipede riders. He started riding a bicycle as did many of his contemporaries – he liked to ride a Favorit racing bicycle.  In the early 1990s, he rode a historical high-wheel for the first time; in 1993 he constructed his first penny-farthing and has been riding this type of bike up to now. Riding his high-wheel bicycle he took part in the “Race Across America”, in the traditional road race Paris – Roubaix and was the first one in the world to ride the routes of the three most popular bicycle races: Tour de France, Giro d´Italia and La Vuelta. He visited nearly thirty countries and cycled nearly across the whole of Europe, America and Australia. 

He is a multiple world champion and earned many prestigious awards, trophies, titles and prizes, e.g. The Veselí nad Moravou Prize and The South Moravian Region Prize; he was awarded The Fair Play Award. He is a member of honour of the Czech Olympians’ Club.  In 2010 he founded the International Charitable Foundation On Bike for Children.
